Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health
Over the past 200 years in the United States, a tension has existed between care and custody as responses to mental health issues. Physicians, psychiatric survivors, families, and government agencies have all shaped mental health policies. Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Healthexamines history to understand how the country has moved away from custodial forms of treatment, sought a more inclusive society, and worked to protect the rights of people with mental health conditions.

New Library Management System – Atriuum
In August, we updated the system we use for collection management, and it is much more use-friendly. You can create a user account for yourself and curate lists, request materials, search the library’s catalog, browse newly-added items and more. There is also a companion app you can download, Librista. I highly recommend taking some time to explore this new resource. You can view our OPAC (Online Pubic Access Catalog) here.
Research Assistance & Workshops
Curated resource guides available here
This comes in many formats. We could do a whole-class beginner guide to using library resources, a more specific tutorial for a more specific assignment, or you can encourage your students to schedule an individual session for extra enrichment. We’d love to help students work through the complexities of academic research – and by extension – ensure that they are finding resources that meet the criteria you are setting for them. We could also do skills-based tutorials that can be integrated into your curriculum including MLA or APA formatting, effective citation methods, or other topics that might be helpful for you.
In-Library Computer Lab
We have a computer lab in the library that can be reserved to accommodate whole classes. This space is also open for student use throughout the week, giving them access to computers and free black-and-white printing.
Resources
We offer a wide range of resources, including a large physical collection, e-books and audiobooks, periodicals, and databases. We welcome input from faculty and staff regarding our collection development, so if there are materials that would enhance your classes, please let us know. This could include physical or digital resources, study aids or even supplies to complete projects.
Study and Conference Rooms
We have 3 study rooms (seats 4, with a computer, large monitor, white board and markers), 1 medium study room or classroom (seats 10, with 8 computers) and 1 large classroom (seats 28, with a computer, projector, and camera) that can be reserved to accommodate whole classes, small-group work, or department meetings.
Coffee & Snacks
We serve hot coffee and hot chocolate alongside a variety of add-ins every day from 7:30 – 3:00ish for only fifty cents a cup. We also sell iced coffee, canned sodas, bottled water and a variety of snacks.
Local Newspapers
While you enjoy your coffee, browse our collection of local newspaper offerings – Clarion-Ledger, Greenwood Commonwealth, Grenada Star, Tallahatchie Sun-Sentinel, Wall-Street Journal, Webster Progressive-Times and Winona Times. Think we should add something else? Let us know!
Library Programming & Events
Over the past two years, we’ve offered a number of exhibits and are excited to offer more in the future. We are open to other programming options, such as book clubs or faculty-specific events, if desired.
The library is not just for students. We’re here to help make your days better and your job easier!
